Exhibition Shows Local Faces of Right-to-Marry Issue

‘Same-Sex Couples: Facing Inequality’ presents more than 200 photos of same-sex couples at Upper Bucks Campus Feb. 22 – March 6

“The PA Diversity Network Photo Project – 200 Same-sex Couples: Facing Inequality” makes its Bucks County debut
February 22 to March 6 at Bucks County Community College’s Upper Bucks Campus.

The 212 framed photos of local same-sex couples will be exhibited in the café of the campus, located at 1 Hillendale Drive, Perkasie. A reception with a presentation by creator
Liz Bradbury will be held Thursday, February 28, at 6 p.m.

Bradbury, the executive director of the PA Diversity Network, launched the project two years ago in response to federal and state political efforts to constitutionally ban legal recognition of same-sex relationships. She says the project seeks to put a local face on discrimination, reminding the public that same-sex couples in Pennsylvania cannot marry and cannot get any rights through civil union.

“The project demonstrates that members of the gay community are your neighbors, teachers, doctors, coworkers and your family,” says Bradbury. “We are real people, we vote, we pay taxes and we don’t have equal rights.”

The constantly growing Photo Project consists of a set of photos projected on a screen and a set of framed photos in a gallery. Labels on each black and white photo include the names of each member of the committed same-sex couple, each of their professions, the number of years they have been together and the number of children they have, if any. The exhibition also includes information and statistics about civil marriage rights and discrimination.

The event is sponsored by the BCCC Upper Bucks Campus Programming Council.
