Same sex, different treatment
Gay, lesbian couples rally for legal marriages.

The Express-Times

Abstract:
"ALLENTOWN | Barb Baus and Cathy Burgi of Bethlehem, like six other same-sex couples, took their $35 nonrefundable application fee and proof of identity Friday to Lehigh County Courthouse.
They sought the unattainable: a marriage license in Pennsylvania, one of 46 states that recognize neither civil unions nor marriages for gays and lesbians...."

Portraying gay couples as folks next door
Abstract:
"In February 2006, when he was campaigning for Pennsylvania's governorship, Lynn Swann endorsed a constitutional amendment that would prevent homosexual couples from having the same rights -- medical, marriage, estate -- as heterosexual partners. The comment bothered Liz Bradbury, founding executive director of the PA Diversity Network, a supportive, activist resource center for gays and lesbians. She felt that Swann, a Hall of Fame wide receiver seeking political office for the first time, was essentially urging her constituents to move out of state if they didn't like discrimination..."

Column by columnist Margie Peterson from the Morning Call Newspaper about the Metropolitan Community Church of the Lehigh Valley's Freedom to Marry Day Rally at the Lehigh County Court House on February 9th, 2007.

By Margie Peterson, February 15, 2007

Someday, denied license will be relic of injustice
Abstract:
"The idea of holding a rally for marriage seems a bit like marching for homeowners insurance or ''The Lawrence Welk Show.'' It's counter-countercultural. So when a group of about 25 people stood in the frigid air last Friday outside the Lehigh County Courthouse chanting, ''What do we want? Marriage! When do we want it? Now!'' the scene had a slightly surreal feel to it...."

Readers weigh in on gay marriage, legal rights denied
Abstract:
"The gay and lesbian community in the Lehigh Valley has what I think of as a columnist support network. Network members suspect — often correctly — that columnists who write in favor of legalizing gay marriage will get an earful from disapproving readers. So they hit their PCs to counteract that effect. Last week was no different. I had written a column about a ''Freedom to Marry'' rally at the Lehigh County Courthouse. The rally was organized by the Rev. Elizabeth Goudy and the Metropolitan Community Church of the Lehigh Valley. Some of the gay couples at the rally applied at the courthouse for marriage licenses, knowing they would be turned down..."

BETH BRELJE Pocono Record Writer February 28, 2007

Bradbury wanted to be in the hospital room, but a nurse stopped her because she was not family. "You have to let me in the room!" she argued. It was one of several similar conversations she would have that day..."

(CBS) As part of our "Swingtown" series, CBS News asked voters in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley – an area that's proven to be an accurate predictor of how America votes in presidential elections for 20 years – to discuss the election-year issues that most concern them.

QUOTE & Abstract

All night, as I watched Trish sleep in the hospital, I was gripped not only with the fear that she may die, but with the fear that at any minute some intolerant hospital bureaucrat would appear and make me leave her side.

Liz Bradbury, 46, has been with her partner Trish Sullivan for 16 years. The two women are founding board members and the Lehigh Valley coordinators of the Pennsylvania Gay and Lesbian Alliance. The following is a personal essay by Liz illustrating why she believes same-sex marriage ought to be the law of the land.

My life partner of 16 years, Trish was in a serious accident in early April...
